Smith Micro/Allume sold me a product with a rebate. I have submitted many rebates. they said they have recieved my rebate and gave me a number to check on the status..i checked and voila...status invalid. i know i submited the correct upc and reicept etc. i searched the web and found i am not alone...this happens often to customers of this company. the product is crappy and the rebate scheme is criminal.

I wanted to simply upgrade 3 versions of Stuffit deluxe and Smith Micro won't do it because they need the serial number of each one. So
I asked them where on the computer was it, and they replied...there is none, but it us a feature request. Anyone know of a good alternative compression/uncompression software ?

I thought I'd buy SM Internet Cleanup to guard myself against any new internet threats to a Mac.

Instead what I got was RIGHT after rebooting after installijng I-Cleanup, OSX failed to boot!! (startup screen with pin-wheel and "no entry sign" - which apparently means that my OS can't boot!! Highly unimpressed!!... and from a program designed to PROTECT the computer!!

I'm currently going through an "archive & install" from my Leopard DVD.

I looking up Internet Cleanup on an XP PC I have, apparently SmithMicro is not liked very much! Looks like I'll try getting my money back, and dump this program!

I do hope I don't lose any files, although most is backed up.

Back when Aladdin owned Stuffit, Spring Cleaning, etc., they were good products. I guess the slugs at Smith Micro bought them? Anyway, I had Spring Cleaning "way back when" and I liked it pretty well. Recently I decided I'd like to have it on my current system. Smith's web site put me off a bit, but I saw a copy at my local Fry's and picked it up anyway. Immediately after installing I got the keychain request, and being cautious I set out to see what it was all about. As I feared, it was questionable activity by Smith. I hate that they have ownership of software which was once useful, and that they have chosen to junk it up with questionable practices and potential security holes. I bought Spring Cleaning to purge the junk off of my hard drive before I migrate to a new one, so once that is done, I'll just unistall it. Maybe then I'll post the key on the Internet for the next guy to use - it would serve them right!

This is helpful. I also had a problem with another SM product, Internet Cleanup, that after the demo version expired, I got a really persistent pop-up over everything on screen saying that it had expired, and to go to [URL] to purchase license. There was no option to decline, and it re-popped instantly whenever I closed it, for over a dozen times. Nor could I Force Quit it, nor remove it. I ended up having to license it, and then request refund. Not to warn customers of this strikes me as unethical, at the least. SmithMicro is off my list.

Thank you for publishing this to the web. I also made the mistake of downloading this garbage program and installing it...I thought I had gotten rid of it but like you just got tired of the nag screen on start up. I was not able to get rid of it so I figured what the hell? Do a trusty ol Google search and maybe someone has posted something about this and Viola! Here I am...

Anyway, thanks! I went into the root Library>Launch Daemons Folder and found a com.smithmicroshcedulerdaemon.plist file and junked it and no more nag screen THANK GOD!

Thanks again!

That is not all. I have my suspicions to believe that a simple visit to a Smith Micro webpage probably fired off an email to me within 24 hours of the visit to just one page.

I ended up on what amounts to a Yahoo! portal search engine, and I typed in a "vmware fusion" query, as I remember it. I saw a bunch of search results, one seemed to be fishy and I clicked it along with the one I wanted. I then was redirected to:
http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/vmware/index.html

Which is a pathetic plug for software that Smith Micro doesn't even make. I wanted the real maker of the software, not them.

Well the weird thing is that I think Yahoo! has tracked me down and told Smith Micro that they have matched me to a registration account that I setup with Smith Micro for an unrelated product. If you look at the kinds of software made by Smith Micro, I think you will agree that they seem to have the technical ability to do this kind of marketing, and I believe that this is right up Yahoo!'s alley for their policies.

So there is my long story. I think this is pretty slick, hardball advertising and marketing shenanigans.

I checked for cookies, and I don't see any produced by Smith Micro.
